Mind your P’s and Q’s …….Please!

January 4, 2010

Listening to the radio this morning on my way to work, the host played a clip from the Weather Channel. In the clip, a meteorologist is doing the weather forecast and then a man disrupts her and says hello. She responds, quite surprised, with a hello and then the man proceeds to (as narrated by the radio host), get on one knee and say, “I know we’ve been talking about this for a long time now, and I love you. Will you PLEASE marry me?” The lady, (thank goodness), says yes but she didn’t sound very excited.

The host said that the point of playing the clip was because he was very irritated by the fact that the man said ‘please.’ He felt that by saying please, the man lacked conviction–which made it seem like he had been begging the woman and figured that the only way he could get her to say yes would be to ask her in front of millions of people.
It’s sort of a trivial situation but I’m still on the fence about it. On the one hand he might have said please just as an act of courtesy, but on the other hand he might have been begging her for a long time and the ‘please’ was his final plea for her to say yes.
What do you guys think? Could the man have showed more conviction by leaving out the ‘please’?

i think it's a matter of courtesy… you're asking… not demanding… but without seeing how it played out or hearing voice inflections it's hard to make a conclusion… nothing wrong w/courtesy jare…

Poor guy! He probably was thinking that this is one of the most important questions he'll ever ask and he's doing it on the air and he's trying to get every bit of it perfect and probably just threw that "please" in because it sounds courteous and romantic and stuff. You need to find this guy and interview him on the blog.

Thinking back on it now, I think the 'please' makes it sound like he REALLY wants her to marry him, which I find romantic.I'm going to to try to find him…I hope she was serious when she said yes.
